Gabrielle Chanel commissioned Ernest Beaux to produce "a woman's perfume with a woman's fragrance" in 1921. The nose presented her with a visionary composition that made use of aldehydes in a unique way. Mademoiselle chose the fifth fragrance sample and decided to call it simply N°5. She introduced the N°5 eau de toilette in 1924.
